Silvermine Rock Climbing
Today is my last day in Cape Town. I hadn’t actually done any climbing in Cape Town and it was near the top of my list. So best do it today.
I rented a car (my unexpected favourite thing to do in South Africa is rent a manual car and drive on the ‘wrong side’ of the road) and I picked up my new climbing pal from the Montagu trip, Chris.
Silvermine is apparently the most popular climbing area on the Cape, but it didn’t seem that way. The rock (Sandstone) was good and not smoothed over or abused. Silvermine is about a 20 minute drive from Cape Town. The hike to the main crag is only about 20 minutes. The climbing here is relatively long single pitch climbs and range in difficulty. A great place from beginner to advanced routes. Silvermine has 5 different crags and over 80 routes with grades ranging from beginner to pretty damn hard (Link below for routes and grades). We spent our day at the Main Crag in the 5.10-5.11 range. Every route we did was really great with some overhanging action and big moves (my favourite!)
This was the perfect spot to spend the last day. There were clouds coming in and out of the crag and it was just legendrie (in an english accent). The video and pics don’t do it justice.
