Surfing in Cape Town, South Africa

Surfing in Cape Town, South Africa

” I always wanted to go surfing..”  Well you should do it, because it’s fun, tiring, frustrating, salty, slappy and just a downright good time.  Today was my first day surfing..

Cape Town area = surfing ..but where the heck are you supposed to do that?!  I had done a bit, not a ton of research into the best surf shops, beaches, local favourite spots etc.   When you don’t know much, ok anything about surfing, you don’t know what to look for.  What conditions are good at what beach.. Is it really worth renting a car to go out to Muizenberg and suck at something for a whole day?  Will there be 100 other newbies hogging the coaches while I drown?

The surfing peoples I found do this:
– Pick you up wherever you are
– They’re mobile. They take you to a beach that they know has the right surf for you with the right wind and swell for your level. (they aren’t located in a hut on the beach, they actually take you to whatever beach has the right conditions that day)
– They keep their classes small (mine had 3 other people)

The small company is a called ‘Stoked School of Surf’.
The company began 5 years ago, in 2009 right here in Cape Town,  South Africa.  From what I gathered they have a small crew of professional, experienced instructors and a single owner that runs a tight ship.  David, my instructor came to pick me up in a small, but clean and well running(!) passenger van.  Behind it, was a teight little custom made surfboard trailer.  It was a good vibe right from the start.  Dave greeted me at my hostel with wide excited eyes, “Matt! Dude! Are you ready to surf?”  Yeah man!  We went on to one more stop to pick up a crew of 3 German students that had a day off from their studies and we were off to Big Bay.

They provide you with a board & wetsuit.
The lessons are simple and you get a lot of free time to try things out and be free.  There are a few formal ‘basics’ lessons, followed by a bunch of free time with tips and tricks hollered out by Dave.  It was super layed back and fun.

A half day of surf, transportation to and from your place and everything you need was $450rand or about $45 US/Canadian dollars.  Wadda bargain people.

I highly recommend surfing and I recommend Stoked.  It was a last minute find for me and a real gem.
